The countdown is on to Maker Faire Detroit 2013

I looked at my calendar and gasped this morning – Maker Faire Detroit 2013 is just 12 days away! Thanks to events like Tinker, Hack, Invent Saturdays at Henry Ford Museum this year, we’ve always got Maker Faire on the brain. But now we’ve REALLY got it on the brain with just a few days remaining until showtime.

As a former maker and current employee at The Henry Ford, I’ve seen Maker Faire Detroit continue to grow and evolve over the years. This year is no exception. As always, we’ve got some pretty fantastic makers joining us this year. What’s especially exciting is to see many new makers join us from across the state and region, along with groups new to our campus.

LMNLogoJoining us from Lansing is the Lansing Makers Network. Bringing several projects and makers, this mid-Michigan hackerspace can be found outside in this year’s midway. Grand Rapids is also well represented this year, too, reminding us that the maker movement is alive and well all over Michigan.

For this year’s craft efforts, the team behind DIYpsi has hand-selected a group of crafters in case you need to do a bit of shopping while at Maker Faire Detroit. My group, Handmade Detroit, handled the Craft Faire duties for years 1-3, so it’s very exciting to see this popular craft fair join the team this year. Look for them outside in the faire’s midway.

We were really intrigued this year to be approached by some area groups who wanted to get involved with the faire. The Michigan Woodworkers Guild and the Ford Model Railroad Club are new-to-us groups that will be showing off their projects and inform guests on how they can get involved once the faire is over.

While we have new makers joining us, some of your favorites are back for repeat visits, like Life-Size Mousetrap, or for fire-breathing dragon Gon KiRin, a farewell performance. Just this morning the EepyBird team tweeted us that they’re getting ready for next weekend. It kind of feels like a family reunion around here!

No matter what your interest might be, Maker Faire Detroit will be a weekend packed with tons of activities for you, your friends, and your family. We’re still busy putting the finishing touches on the schedule, so make sure to check back here to the website for the latest information.
